Murray takes on Gasquet; Scotland in Malta

Andy Murray Roland GarrosTennis: Andy Murray will contest a quarter final tie with local hero Richard Gasquet in the French Open following a straight sets victory over the American John Isner.

The Scot sealed a rain-interrupted fourth round tie 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 40 minutes, while Gasquet saw off the challenge of fifth seed Kei Nishikori.

Murray has now reached the quarter-finals at 19 of the last 20 Grand Slam events he has contested.

He later joined fellow top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams in expressing concern about the Zika outbreak in Brazil.

He said he intended to defend his gold medal at the Olympics but would be taking advice regarding the mosquito-borne disease which has been responsible for birth defects.

“A lot of people have been talking about it,” he said. “It is something I will speak to a couple of doctors about and see what they advise.”

The World Health Organisation has rejected a call from 150 scientists to relocate or delay the Games.

There was bad news for Andy’s elder brother Jamie whose eight-match winning run in Grand Slam men’s doubles ended in the third round.

Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares, who were seeded fourth, lost 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) against 16th seeds Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes.

Murray and Soares won the Australian Open in January.

Football: Scotland were beaten by Italy, Southampton’s Graziano Pelle scoring the only goal of their friendly played in Malta.

The Scots have only beaten Italy once, winning 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in November 1965 and didn’t look like breaking that record tonight as they were outplayed by their opponents and didn’t manage a shot on goal.

Skipper Darren Fletcher joined Tom Boyd on 72 international appearances, taking him joint fifth on Scotland’s most capped players.

Scotland face France next weekend.
