Diversity helps expansion

Record year of events for Glasgow’s SECC

SECC eventsThe Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre (SECC) Glasgow is celebrating its strongest year to date for conference and corporate events business.

It has recorded a 17% increase in turnover on 2014/15, which was also one of the venue’s strongest years, and an increase of 18% in gross profit.

A total of 57 conferences and corporate events were hosted at the venue during 2015/16 – comprising 31 national, European and international association conferences and 26 corporate meetings and events.

Kathleen Warden, director of conferences, said: “This year has been yet another incredible year for the SECC, driven by a strong performance in the international conference sector, as well as with national association meetings and smaller corporate events too – which continue to be growth sectors for the business.”

Diversity has been a key factor in its success. It became the first venue in the world to be accredited under the World Obesity Federation’s Healthy Venue Awards programme. Such investments have included creating a healthy venue task force, partnering with Nextbike to provide free bikes to conference delegates and offering low fat, low sugar and low alcohol menu options.
