Polar Academy fund-raiser

Meet Mark Beaumont and hear his cycling tales

Mark Beaumont

Endurance cyclist and television broadcaster Mark Beaumont will talk about his remarkable adventures in a one-off charity event in Edinburgh next week.

Mark will be at Edinburgh Academy in Stockbridge, sharing short films, photography and stories from his Cairo to Cape Town 10,000 km trip which broke the world record for the fastest solo cycle ride for the length of Africa by finishing in 42 days and 8 hours.

He will also talk about his record-breaking round the world ride and what brought him back to the bike after years of ocean rowing and Arctic adventures.

Closer to home he will reflect on some adventures in Scotland, including taking on the Cairngorms on a penny farthing.

This was in addition to his non-stop North Coast 500 ride (Inverness – Applecross – Ullapool – Durness – John O’ Groats – Inverness) which he completed in 38 hours, setting an unofficial record for what is fast becoming a “bucket list” ride for cyclists.

Edinburgh’s recently retired professional road racer James McCallum (aka Jimmy Mac) is making an attempt to better Mark’s 38 hours on 18 June to raise funds for Thrombosis UK after tragically losing family member Charlene at the age of just 36 at the end of 2015.

Jimmy will be attending the event to spice up the Q&A. To find out more about Jimmy’s fundraising follow him on twitter atbit.ly/JamesMcCallum.

Ronde Bicycle Outfitters will be cheering Jimmy on and cycling the route in the days in advance of Jimmy (over a more leisurely 5 days).  To enquire about taking part in the Ronde NC500 ask in store or email info@rondebike.com

Mark Beaumont 2Mark will be joined at next week’s event by guest speaker, Craig Mathieson, Head of the Polar Academy, who has just returned from Greenland with a group of 10 schoolchildren from St Augustine’s, Liberton, Gracemount, Forrester and Tynecastle High.  This event is the first chance to find out how their adventure went and will be supporting The Polar Academy.

The event is being organised by Stockbridge Local & Ronde Bicycle Outfitters.  Tickets can be purchased

Tickets are £17.50 and include a drinks reception from 6pm at Edinburgh Academy, with the event starting at 7pm.

Following the event Mark will be signing books and taking orders for his Africa book due out in May and drinks will be available from the bar.  In addition, exclusive offers will be available from Ronde Bicycle Outfitters.
