Shorter journey times promised from high speed rail

Waverley station passenger ticket gateHigh speed rail between Scotland and London has moved closer following an agreement to upgrade the infrastructure that will substantially cut journey times.

A government commissioned report will be published tomorrow (Mon) and is expected consider cross-Border options including a full extension of the line from northern England, to upgrades of existing east and west coast lines.

HS2 chairman Sir David Higgins has said an upgrade is a more realistic option.

It is likely that the delayed report will recommend improvements to the track and other infrastructure.

This, together with new 225mph trains, could reduce journey times between Edinburgh and London, currently around four hours, to nearer three hours.
