Chinese celebration of arts

Waverley welcomes year of the monkey

YHGE martial artsDancers and musicians gathered on Waverley station in Edinburgh to celebrate the Chinese New Year among market stallholders exhibiting traditional and contemporary crafts such as paper lantern painting, calligraphy and origami.

Among those marking the start of the Year of the Fire Monkey were the Confucius Institute, YHGE Martial Arts (above), and Taiwanese artist Yosifu with opera singer Marin Aelred and a volunteer Chinese community choir.

Christina Chan, a representative of the Chinese community in Scotland, said: “We love this time of hear, but it is really special when the wider community gets involved too.

“There are over 8,000 Chinese people living in Edinburgh an we love to share our traditional and more contemporary arts. We really hope this will become an annual event.”
