Nadal and Williams out of Australian Open
The Australian Open has already claimed the scalp of two Grand Slam champions as Rafa Nadal and Venus Williams were beaten in their first round matches.
Fernando Verdasco, the world number 45, beat Nadal in five sets: 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 while Britain’s number one female Johanna Konta knocked out eighth seed Venus Williams 6-4 6-2 to reach the second round.
Konta secured victory in 79 minutes as seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams struggled to cope.
The 24-year-old and world number 47 is the only British woman left in the singles draw following Heather Watson’s defeat. Konta will face either Carina Witthoeft or Saisai Zheng in the next round.
Andy Murray eased through against German teenager Alexander Zverev and will play fast-serving Australian Sam Groth in round two. Fellow Brits Dan Evans and Aljaz Bedene were beaten.
