BBC Scotland hires new head of news

BBC ScotlandGary Smith, the BBC’s UK news editor, is to become the new head of news and current affairs at BBC Scotland, according to reports.

He worked at Millbank, the BBC’s political news HQ for nearly 10 years until leaving in December 2007 to take up his current position at Television Centre.

He replaces John Boothman whose departure in June followed internal issues that led to a meeting between the NUJ and BBC management.

He headed news operations since June 2011, and was replaced by interim head Peter MacRae.

The director of BBC Scotland, Ken MacQuarrie, said Mr Smith brings with him “a track record of leading and inspiring large teams”.

Pete McRae will continue as acting head of BBC Scotland news until Mr Smith takes up the post early in the new year.
