Glencore yo-yos; Alliance rises on board changes

Thur: Miners were in focus and epitomised volatility of current trading. Mining group Glencore rose nearly 100p in early trade only to dropping nearly 5% and close down 0.6% at 91.02p as renewed worries surfaced over its debt.

Oil companies were among the top gainers, with BP rising 2.5% and Royal Dutch Shell up 2.4%.

They managed to hold on their gains, even after Brent crude slid weakened following the Wall Street opening. Brent rose above $49 a barrel as more bombing raids took place over Syria.

Alliance Trust rose 2% to 467p as the Dundee company unveiled a shake-up of the board.

The blue-chip FTSE100 index closed 10.86 points higher, up 0.2% at 6,072.47 points, having been up by more than 1% for most of the day.
