Simpson & Marwick ties up merger with Clyde & Co

Gordon KeydenScottish legal practice Simpson & Marwick is merging with Clyde & Co, creating a £420 million firm.

The tie-up is Clyde’s first step into Scotland and adds to its insurance litigation service. It will also add seven offices to others in London, Guildford, Manchester and Oxford.

The merged firm will be known as Clyde & Co, with senior partner James Burns remaining at the helm. It will have 360 partners, 1,800 legal professionals and some 3,000 staff in 45 locations. The residential property division will continue to trade under the Simpson & Marwick name.

Their London offices will be brought together next April, with Simpson & Marwick moving into Clyde’s Aldgate office.

Simpson & Marwick has 45 partners, with the majority advising on insurance disputes, employment and real estate. The firm had turnover last year of £28.5m.

Simpson & Marwick senior partner Gordon Keyden (pictured) said the merger “demonstrates our dedication as a firm to present the strongest practice teams to support and progress our services to clients in Scotland and England.”

Keyden will become Scotland managing partner and will sit on Clyde’s management board.

Talks between the two firms began in January. Simpson & Marwick and Kennedys called off their proposed merger at the end of 2013.
