Law firm backs wheelchair racer
Harper Macleod helps Sammi go for glory
The legal firm announced the news at the official launch of its new Edinburgh office, which was opened by the Minister for Community Safety & Legal Affairs, Paul Wheelhouse.
Sammi, 19, who also addressed the launch event in front of 250 guests at Citypoint, Haymarket, was last week named in the British Athletics team for the upcoming IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.
Martin Darroch, chief executive of Harper Macleod, said: “The timing of Sammi’s selection couldn’t have been any better as we announced our continued relationship in front of the whole firm and many of our friends and clients.
“The next year is going to be an incredibly exciting one both for Sammi and for the many people who follow her progress, with both the World Championships and Rio Paralympics taking place, and we are thrilled to continue our support.
“Watching her progression over the past two years has been a real highlight for everyone at Harper Macleod and she has been a tremendous ambassador for the firm and what we’re all about.”
Sammi, Harper Macleod’s Athlete Ambassador since 2013, said: “Though I hoped to be selected for Doha, I can still hardly believe that I’ve made the team and will have the chance to experience the World Championships.
“It’s taken a lot of hard work and wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of my family, friends and those who help me be a full-time athlete. I’m extremely thankful for all the support I have been given and I really feel part of the Harper Macleod family after all we’ve experienced together.”
Mr Wheelhouse official opened Harper Macleod’s office at Citypoint, which is now home to 18 resident Partners after the arrival of seven new Partners over the past few months. The firm has been in the capital since 2001, however the new office is triple the size of its previous home in the city.
Harper Macleod and Sammi’s relationship started after the firm became Legal Advisers to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The firm supported the then 17-year-old as she prepared for her first major international event and have continued to work with her since.
One of only four Scots in the team, and the only female T53 athlete, Sammi will be competing in four events – 100m, 200, 400m and 800m – during the championships, which take place between 22 and 31 October in the Qatari capital.
