Red carpet at the Festival Theatre

Fassbender brings his Macbeth to Edinburgh

Macbeth FassbenderUpdated: A touch of Hollywood came to Edinburgh on Sunday night for the biggest film premiere to be held in the city since Braveheart and Rob Roy 20 years ago.

The 1900-seater Festival Theatre will host the first screening of a new version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

However, Ms Cotillard pulled out of the premiere at the last moment. Her spokesman said the actress, who is in Sweden, was ill and unable to attend.

The movie was filmed on the Isle of Skye last year and will go on general release on 2 October.

Australian director Justin Kurzel is also expected on the red carpet.

The film was financed by Film4 and StudioCanal and as praised by critics when it had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The Edinburgh premiere will be followed by an after-party at the National Museum of Scotland.

Skye is hoping for a substantial tourism boost and VisitScotland recently launched a guide to locations linked with the play and Macbeth’s real life, including Cawdor Castle, in Nairn, and Glamis Castle, in Angus.
