Former World No 1 has leg injury
Sharapova pulls out of US Open
The world Number Three, who has not played since losing her Wimbledon semi-final to Serena Williams, told her Facebook followers: “I have done everything possible to be ready, but it was just not enough time…”
She was poised for another semi-final tie with Williams whose path to the final and another title now looks an even safer bet.
Even though Sharapova has failed to beat Williams since 2004 her absence will be a loss to the women’s game which is struggling to find contenders for the American whose dominance looks set to continue for some years.
The British player Heather Watson – who came within two points of a shock victory over Williams at Wimbledon –is hoping today’s match against Lauren Davis will help her recover her winning ways after losing three of the six matches she has played since the meeting.
