Celtic miss out on £8m after Malmo defeat

CelticCeltic’s defeat to Swedish club Malmo in tonight’s Champions’ League qualifier means the Scottish Champions will miss out on £12 million.

The 2-0 victory of the Malmo saw them win 4-3 on aggregate and secure a place in the elite competition which will earn them £20m. Celtic will pick up £8m from dropping into the second tier Europa Cup.

Celtic will rue allowing an early advantage in the home leg slip away which left them facing a tough test in the return tie.

Markus Rosenberg, missing for the first encounter, opened the scoring and after the visitors had a goal disallowed for a foul it was a second for Malmo from a Dedryck Boyata own goal that saw Ronny Deila’s men eliminated.

It now almost certain that Dutchman Virgil van Dijk will leave to join Southampton which will deplete a squad that Deila was confidently predicting to have good run in this season’s Champions League after he failed at the same stage last year.

He may now face the task of another rebuilding of the team even so early in the season.
