Retailers for in-fill sites

M&S and Sainsbury’s poised for Leith Walk

ShrubhillSupermarket wars are about to break out on Leith Walk, Edinburgh. Rumour is that the two new developments under way on long-standing gap sites will be occupied respectively by an M&S Simply Food and a Sainsbury’s Local.

They will compete with the existing ScotMid and Tesco Express along the same stretch of road, as well as a number of independent convenience stores.

The two projects on the northbound carriageway are being constructed by Stirling-based Ogilvie and will add hundreds more student flats to the city’s burgeoning student accommodation.

M&S will move into the new units being built on the disused eyesore site at 34b-40 Haddington Place which was formerly part of Edinburgh’s original Botanic Gardens and until recently housed the Botanic Cottage now being reconstructed at the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Edinburgh-based Ziggurat Student Living purchased the nearby Shrubhill site from previous owner Unite. The new block (artist’s impression above with trams) will have restaurants on the ground floor alongside the Sainsbury’s unit.

Locals will be hoping that the arrival of two blue chip retailers into the area will hasten long-awaited improvements to the road and pavements which are deteriorating badly and blight the area.

They may also help bring other high end retailers into that part of the city which will benefit from the in-fill developments.
