Gin distillers drink to award
Anniversary gift as Pickering’s wins gold
The company, the first to distil gin in the city for 150 years, picked up Gold at the World Spirits Awards in Denmark.
Judges scored on fragrance, taste and harmony and the panel were looking specifically for intensity, purity and typicality in the entrants.
Marcus Pickering, director and co-founder, said: “It is truly wonderful to have achieved this in our first year – it is the perfect end to a fabulous year for us – and a great birthday present. The World Spirits Awards attracts brands, distilleries and products from all over the world and we are delighted that Pickering’s Gin has been recognised at such a high level.”
Pickering’s Gin was launched last March at Summerhall, the former Royal Dick building, and is one of a number that have opened in the city in the last few months. Others include Edinburgh Gin which operates from a cellar bar near the Caledonian Hotel.
Pickering’s is based on an original recipe, handwritten on a fragment of paper dated 17 July 1947, and has been fine-tuned, perfecting its balance and tweaking it for today’s contemporary palate. It contains nine botanicals including juniper, coriander, cardamom and fennel.
