Rugby campaign misses target

O2’s crass Churchill stunt is a thorny issue

Churchill statueSomebody at O2 and the England Rugby Union must have thought it was a good idea to dress up the statue of Sir Winston Churchill near the House of Commons in an England rugby shirt.

Those behind this particularly distasteful piece of PR need reminding that apart from trivialising the great man on the 50th anniversary of his death, Churchill was the British, not the English, PM. And, for that matter, he was a Dundee MP.

To add further insult to injury this photo of the British wartime leader was tweeted with a caption saying the “entire country was starting to wear the rose”. Entire country? Do they not know that this is a Six Nations tournament?

Not surprisingly, there were demands on Twitter for the image to be removed.
