Index moving towards 1999 peak
FTSE100 hits 15 year high and closes in on record
FTSE100 closes down 0.05 pts at 6,898.08 after reaching a 15-year intra-day high of 6,921.3, just 8.7pts short of all-time record.
The index rose on hopes of a Greek settlement, but sentiment faded and coupled with increasing global tensions it prompted the market to turn downward. The leading index finished the day flat with a number of factors pulling investors in different directions.
Low inflation and ECB stimulus encouraged buyers, while better unemployment figures in the UK made some believe interest rates may still rise before the end of the year.
