News rugby corr is latest to leave Johnston Press

Edinburgh Evening NewsBill Lothian, who has covered rugby for the Edinburgh Evening News for 33 years, is among those to leave under the Johnston Press redundancy programme.

It is understood that around 27 staff on the three Edinburgh-based titles applied for the scheme and that at least two were refused.

The company announced this latest round of redundancies last year in order to trim costs and merge The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and Evening News editorial operations, although most of the staff on the two national titles have been combined since 2009.

Among the cutbacks is veteran columnist George Kerevan, now standing as an SNP candidate. Bill Jamieson has also seen his contributions scaled back. Other columns have been dropped and more may follow.
