From commission to new board role
Lord Smith to take over as chairman at Forth Ports
Lord Smith of Kelvin is to succeed Michael Seymour as chairman of Forth Ports at the turn of the year.
Lord Smith’s latest appointment follows quickly on from his role chairing the commission on new powers for Scotland and the organising committee of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
He is chairman of Perth-based utility company SSE and the UK Green Investment Bank and is a non-executive director of Standard Bank Group.
He was chairman of the Weir Group in Glasgow and spent much of his career in investment banking with Morgan Grenfell.
Michael Seymour has been chairman of Forth Ports since 2011 when the company was acquired by Otter Ports, a subsidiary of Arcus European Infrastructure Fund.
Charles Hammond, Forth’s chief executive, paid tribute to Mr Seymour and said he was delighted to attract someone of Lord Smith’s calibre to succeed him.
Lord Smith said he was looking forward to getting involved in an “exciting business with great potential”.
He added: “Ports play a strategically vital but unsung role in supporting a strong, successful UK economy, making a huge contribution to our economic success in everything from tourism to energy.”
