Premier Inn unveils Zip as no-frills hotel service

Room for two: the new concept is stripped down to basics

Premier Inn has unveiled a no-frills brand for those seeking a basic hotel service. The company said that the pod idea was to “do the essentials brilliantly, then take away everything else”.

Zip by Premier Inn will offer its 8.5 sq metre rooms randomly on arrival from £19 per night. Not all rooms will have windows.

However, they will include a single bed which can be converted into a double, as well as a TV, toilet, power shower, towel, free wi-fi and overhead storage.

Rooms will be cleaned every three days, although guests can pay a  £5 daily charge to have extra cleaning.

Zip will be rolled out across the country

There will be an ironing room on each floor, a bar, chill out area with a TV and table football, and breakfast for a small added cost.

Rooms on the ground floor will be wheelchair accessible, with “en-suite wet rooms with grab rails, emergency pull cords and more space to manoeuvre”.

PriestmanGoode, which designs first class aircraft cabins, designed the rooms.

The first Zip hotel opens in Cardiff next March and will be rolled out across the country. A second is being lined up for Southampton.

The Yotel chain also offers compact pod-style rooms in New York, Boston and Singapore, as well as at Gatwick, Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle and Schiphol airports.
