Police send report to Fiscal

Ex-SNP MP McGarry charged over fraud claim

natalie-mcgarry-commonsFormer SNP Glasgow East MP Natalie McGarry has been charged with fraud following a police investigation into claims of financial discrepancies in a Scottish independence campaign group.

The alleged offences are believed to be linked to Ms McGarry’s involvement with the groups Women for Independence and Glasgow Regional Association.

Ms McGarry, who was elected last May, resigned the SNP whip when the allegations emerged late last year. She remains a Glasgow MP.

She was a leading figure in the 2014 Yes campaign. An inquiry was launched after Women for Independence, of which Ms McGarry was a founding member, reported differences between donations and its expenditure between 2014 and 2015.

In a statement Police Scotland said: “On Tuesday September 27 a 35-year-old woman was charged in connection with alleged fraud offences. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Ms McGarry has always maintained her innocence.
